I’ve been meaning to take the trip out to see the dolphins and whales in the Hauraki Gulf with ExploreNZ for ages, and I finally booked a trip in, only for the weather to be pretty awful on the day we were supposed to go out. We braved the conditions anyway and were rewarded with what we came looking for.
The Sky Tower hiding behind the bad weather as we left the CBD.
As we got out towards the east coast of the Coromandel, the weather cleared a bit and we could see what we had left behind in Auckland. The curved effect that the squall has on the horizon is cool.
To find whales you look for dolphins, to find dolphins you look for birds. The gannets were in fine form diving for the fish pushed up by the bigger fish and dolphins below.
And there were plenty of common dolphins to be found, they love cruising in front of the boat and use the slipstream of the boat to glide along. Awesome to watch.
We were lucky enough to see 4 or 5 Bryde whales on the trip and this one stayed up for long enough for me to get this shot.
The Coromandel looking mysterious.
